Lydia – Character Study

Lydia – Character Study

Author Darlene J. Conard

Lydia is a significant and influential figure in the Book of Acts. Her story provides excellent insights into the early Christian group and offers a glimpse into the roles that women could play in the church’s flourishing.

She is presented to us in Acts 16:14-15, where she is recognized as a famous seller of luxurious purple cloth. Lydia was a merchant from Thyatira, a city known for its prosperous dyeing industry. She specialized in producing purple cloth and was highly skilled in her craft. Her work reflected her strong financial status, as the vibrant dyes from Thyatira were in high demand in various markets.

Purple dye was a costly and luxurious product often linked to the wealthy and powerful classes. This shows that Lydia was a successful trader and a respected community member.

During her time in Philippi, Lydia was drawn to the riverbank, where the apostle Paul fervently preached to a gathering of worshippers. As she listened to his compelling message about Jesus Christ, she felt a stirring in her heart, awakening her spirit to a new understanding and purpose. The words flowed around her like a gentle breeze, and in that sacred moment, Lydia experienced a profound transformation that reshaped her life.

Overwhelmed with joy, she and her entire household embraced the Christian faith, becoming a memorial as Europe’s first recorded convert to Christianity. The moment of their baptism was filled with deep meaning, symbolizing Lydia’s unwavering dedication to her newfound beliefs. This pivotal event represented her commitment and served as a crucial turning point for the spread of Christianity into Gentile communities, paving the way for future generations to explore faith and spirituality.

After her baptism, Lydia’s character is further revealed through her extraordinary hospitality. She invited Paul and his companions—Silas, Timothy, and Luke—to stay at her home. Lydia’s invitation is heartfelt, as she implored them to accept her hospitality if they regard her as a true believer in the Lord. This willingness to open her home reflects her immediate dedication to her new faith and demonstrates her desire to support and further the apostles’ mission. Lydia’s home soon became a vital gathering place for the early Christian community in Philippi, encouraging an atmosphere of fellowship and support, which was crucial for the church’s growth.

Lydia’s role as a merchant of purple cloth gave her a unique level of independence and influence, mainly in a historical framework where women often had limited rights and opportunities. Her successful business positions her as a financial provider and elevates her status in her community. Unlike many women of her time, Lydia had the means to engage in trade, make independent choices, and contribute meaningfully to the church’s mission. Her economic independence represents the potential for women in the early church to impact their communities spiritually and socially intensely.

Lydia’s story is essential for understanding how Christianity grew beyond its Jewish roots into the wider Gentile world. Her conversion marks a personal change and symbolizes the early church’s efforts to reach out. Lydia’s acceptance of faith demonstrates how beliefs unite different groups across cultures and societies. Her story shows that personal faith can transform lives and have a broader impact—on Entire communities.

Lydia is known for her strong dedication and service in the early church. Her legacy shows the positive effects of hospitality, creativity, and commitment to helping the Christian movement. Lydia’s story inspires believers to value inclusivity and recognize women’s essential roles in faith communities throughout history.

The Test of Time

The Test of Time

Author Darlene J. Conard

From Chronos to Kairos

“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” 2 Peter 3:8 KJV

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.”  Isaiah 40:28   KJV

“Insert a chapter in this book titled “The Test of Time.” That’s all the Lord gave me at that moment. “How does that relate to identity?”

“You will come to understand in time,” he replied. I knew an unforgettable lesson would eventually reveal itself, yet I was unaware of its relevance to one’s identity.

In 2024, I began a significant journey, with each step guided by the divine hand of the Lord. I am excited to share this experience with you, knowing His guidance will inspire and reassure you. This marked the start of something truly remarkable.

Something devastating occurred, challenging me to step far outside my comfort zone. It was an event that shook me to my core, and while I can’t share every detail, I believe it’s essential to convey the essence of what happened. In the turmoil, I spoke earnestly to the Lord, expressing my frustration and confusion, “Lord, You could have stopped this from happening. I obeyed and did what You required of me. Pausing momentarily to review the situation, I continued, “This is an attack from hell, a demonic influence at work!” In response, I felt His presence and clarity as He replied, “Yes, this is the enemy.”

“You could have stopped it, Lord.”

“Yes, I could have, but I allowed it.”

Listen to me; please don’t close yourself off. Remember what Pilate asked Jesus when He remained silent before him? He said, “Don’t you know I have the power to crucify you and the power to release you?” Jesus responded, “You could have no power at all against me, except it is given from above” (John 19:10-11).

The word Kairos is the Greek word for appointed time, and the word Chronos is Greek for now. Chronos is a season of preparation, a time God uses to mold and shape us. It’s a time for our restoration, getting rid of old things, and getting our thoughts aligned with God’s direction, so when Kairos (the appointed time) comes, we are equipped, powerful, and closer to God and His wisdom. If we do not cooperate with God during Chronos, we will not get to Kairos.

God precisely crafted the universe, each aspect unfolding within an accurately planned timeframe. For example, He fashioned humanity on the sixth day and rested on the seventh. When Mary brought up the wine shortage at the wedding celebration, Jesus indicated that His time had not yet come. This suggests that the timing was purposefully appointed, encompassing the who, when, where, and why. This divine timing imparts the value of patience. It instills trust in His plan, bringing a soothing sense of calm and hopeful assurance that even amidst uncertainty, His plan unfolds flawlessly during Chronos. Think of a flower unfolding.

God will not open the door to greatness until we are fully prepared. We experience periods of transformation.

God’s timing may appear delayed, but He is always precise. We have become spoiled by inventions that instantly cater to our needs. Our fast-paced world demands much of our lives, and slowing means losing so much. I’ve asked myself, is it worth losing my sanity or losing out to God? Jesus reminded Martha that Mary chose Him over the hustle and bustle of life. She sat at His feet to be ministered to.

Here is another deep insight I received during a challenging period. My friend’s grandmother passed away in February 2018, and I was left with many questions and a sense of uncertainty about my purpose. While spending quiet time with God the day after the funeral, I heard Him say, “I AM THAT I AM.”

“Lord, I know that You are. I’ve read this many times.”

“No —you do not —understand, I AM THAT I AM.” His unwavering persistence pulled me away from my tasks, compelling me to sit silently and truly listen. In that quiet moment, a vivid vision of a majestic mountaintop appeared before me. The air was crisp, and the view was breathtaking. In that ethereal space, I heard Him speak softly, “Darlene, I knew you even before you took your first breath. I was there in your beginnings; I AM with you in every challenge of your life and will be waiting for you in the journey ahead. Rest assured; I AM already waiting for you in the future.” In Revelation 22:13 KJV, the Lord says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” 2 Peter 3:8 amplifies that one day with the Lord is a thousand years. As the years have unfolded, the passage of time has significantly shaped my character, forging within me a profound sense of patience that I once thought was beyond my grasp. Each experience, whether joyful or challenging, has served as a lesson, teaching me the value of perseverance and the importance of remaining calm in the face of adversity.

In this journey, I have found myself diving deeply into the workings of my faith. Through meditative moments, prayer, and exploration of spiritual texts, I appreciate the massiveness. I’ve grappled with questions and uncertainties, and in the process, I have uncovered layers of meaning that have enriched my understanding of God. This exploration has strengthened my faith and illuminated the beauty and depth of the spiritual life, fostering a connection that continues to grow and evolve.

During the chronos period, I often find myself experiencing long periods of intense spiritual warfare. This is when we declare Psalm 23:4, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” There’s much more going on than we realize in the spirit realm. The enemy will tempt us to question or go ahead of God.

During these challenging times, I feel a profound struggle within my spirit, facing various doubts, fears, and temptations. However, I understand that God allows these experiences to serve a greater purpose—my spiritual growth. Each trial pushes me to deepen my faith, refine my character, and rely more closely on God’s guidance and strength. Through these periods, I learned valuable lessons that strengthened my relationship with Him and helped me navigate future challenges—these challenges I have discovered come during Chronos, preparation time for Kairos.

Job’s trial was not an indefinite struggle; it had a decisive endpoint. When the ordeal finally ended, the richness of God’s blessings multiplied significantly. Consider it this way: much like leaving money to accumulate in a savings account, which consistently earns interest over time, Job’s faithfulness during his hardships ultimately resulted in an abundance of divine rewards.

In the mantle of darkness

Author Darlene J. Conard

… “I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.”   Isaiah 45:3 KJV

Don’t let this chapter turn you off because of the title. Please give me your full attention; I’ll explain.

“In moments of hardship and struggle, when the world seems enveloped in darkness, we have the opportunity to uncover the priceless treasures of God. Although wisdom may seem intangible and out of reach, it can be discovered through prayer and seeking guidance in God’s Word.

“I will give, who- God. The receiver is us. God affirms that the treasures of darkness, hidden riches, of- what kind of places- secret? We may know that He who called us by name will know He is Israel’s God. (Isaiah 45:2) God distinctly declares that these will be our possession if we don’t faint. When I say faint, I mean becoming tired, weary, and letting faith go.”

This verse challenges our understanding by showing that God admits to creating evil despite the common association of darkness with Satan. Isaiah 45:7 (KJV) states, “I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.” God has chosen darkness as His secret place.

My understanding of God has been shaped by a fiery trial I experienced during the darkest times of my life. In these moments, I discovered profound truths about myself, a testament to the transformative power of God’s presence in our darkest hours.

… “when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.” (Genesis 15:12 KJV) Abraham experienced darkness, but in the horrifying darkness, God spoke to him, making a promise, saying, “Know for sure that your descendants will be strangers [living temporarily] in a land (Egypt) that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.  But on that nation whom your descendants will serve, I will bring judgment, and afterward, they will come out [of that land] with great possessions.  As for you, you shall [die and] go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth generation, your descendants shall return here [to Canaan, the land of promise], for the wickedness and guilt of the Amorites is not yet complete (finished).” It goes on to say, “When the sun had gone down, and a [deep] darkness had come, there appeared a smoking brazier and a flaming torch which passed between the [divided] pieces [of the animals].  On the same day, the LORD made a covenant (promise, pledge) with Abram, saying, “To your descendants, I have given this land, From the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates– [the land of] the Kenites and the Kenizzites and the Kadmonites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Rephaim, the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Girgashites and the Jebusites.” (Genesis 15:13- 21 AMP)

Abraham had to fight to protect his sacrifice for a promise beyond the darkness.

This verse gives the impression that there’s a contradiction. Let’s break it down. Children love to display their creations. “Look, I made this with my hands.” That project created from their little minds, hands, and strength will produce reactions. “Honey, that’s wonderful! Wow, you are so creative!” It’s displayed on the refrigerator. Now, everyone who passes by will see it. God produces something: light. Light affects the work of darkness. I make peace. I guarantee that stability made in one area will stir chaos in another. Prayer and praise will stir evil. [DC1] God is acknowledging His actions and their results.

Without dark places in our lives, we wouldn’t experience His glory. It’s an altercation: get out of my way so God can make me new. I had the concept at the beginning of my conversion, “I don’t have much to change.” I was so wrong! Now I say, “God, I didn’t realize how many rough edges I have!” We are constantly changing when we pray. I don’t want to remain the same! I yearn to embody the Darlene God sees, aspiring to far more than mere surface-level Christianity. I hunger for a profound understanding of the depths of God and His teachings. … “In his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” 1 Timothy 6:16 KJV

Moses desperately wanted to see the face of God. That request couldn’t be fulfilled. “Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.” (Exodus 33:20). One thing he could do. God, the Great I Am, took Moses directly to His secret place. Nowhere other than the cleft of the rock. He took the hands He used to create you and me to cover Moses. His writing with names engraved upon it was removed just so that he could catch a glimpse of God’s back parts. Now, here is the revelation. We, more often than not, believe it’s the darkness of the enemy. Remember that God blocked Moses’ view with His hand. The purpose of a blindfold is to stop visibility. The individual is left in the dark about what will be presented. God blindfolded Moses to position Himself for Moses’ sight. God blocks our view with His hand so we may experience His glory more significantly.  (Exodus 33:18-34:9) In one chapter, I explained my fear of nightfall approaching. Satan will use whatever he can to paralyze us with fear. It is a necessity to seek God at all costs.      [DC2]

Diamonds are not created from coal but from the earth’s carbon world. The diamond, the stability zone, is in the earth’s mantle, most pressurized with heat. When volcanoes erupt, diamonds are embedded in the earth’s core chunks. The weight of the pressure under heat makes this a valuable gem. The mantle is very significant, and the darkness is substantial.

The darkness holds significance for this reason: When a child is in the mother’s womb, they are shielded from light. A seed is deeply planted into the ground, away from sunlight. A secret is concealed in the dark, although God sees all. An unborn child is a tiny soul developing and receiving nourishment from the mother for a season. The ground provides nourishment for the seed while it incubates in darkness. As it lies buried, it begins to germinate. The root then breaks out of the seed coat, signaling the end of the dormancy stage.

“God knows when we need to incubate. Our trials are not meant to destroy us. The cord of grace will transfer strength to that dark place. In time, we will emerge renewed, stronger, wiser, and ready for where we are going.”

I have often said, “This trial will destroy me. It is too painful and unbearable.

God will use discomfort to lure us out of our comfort zones. We must pray and praise our way out.

I enjoy the sunlight! Rain, rain, rain, I dreaded hearing this in the forecast! Darkness, gloom, and sleepiness, I don’t want it! God taught me something that completely changed my view of rainy days. Without the cloudy days, how is it possible to see the light more excellently? Moses had a life-changing experience due to a season of darkness. We encounter being in a crowd of people, but loneliness lingers. That is a sign that God is calling us to a secret place with Him. Communion with the Lord reveals who and where we are in life.  I have experienced an emptiness even with people I love. Now, I understand that it is a sign that God is drawing me into my prayer closet. The beauty of the pearl comes from pressure inside the shell of the clam. Darkness is thought of only as a place for evil. Psalm 23 verse 4 says, “Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff shall comfort me.” Evil lurks to attack our fragile state. His words are a comfort, and His staff pulls us from the snares of danger.

During times of darkness and uncertainty, God continuously transforms us, preparing us for the next phase of our lives. Just like how a seed grows in the darkness of the soil before sprouting into a beautiful plant, we, too, undergo a process of incubation and growth. With each cycle, we are called to surrender to God’s strength, gain wisdom, and strive to embody the qualities of Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions. This transformation journey requires us to shed elements of our old selves and embrace a more Christ-like existence marked by compassion, love, and humility.

God continuously recreates us for the next phase of our lives while we are incubating in darkness. We must gain strength and wisdom each time and become less of ourselves and more like Jesus.

Exodus 33:11 amplifies the strong bond between God and Moses. Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD speaks to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. (NLT) James 2:23 also specifics, …  “Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.” (KJV)

Even during our darkest moments, God will unveil our true identity in Him.

Simeon’s Desire

Simeon’s Desire

Author Darlene J. Conard

Simeon knew by foreknowledge that Jesus was born. I have no doubts that an atmospheric shift emerged. He knew that it was time to go to the temple.

I can vividly picture Simeon, his weathered hands gently cradling the Savior, a tiny bundle swaddled in humble fabric yet radiating an overwhelming presence of the divine. At this moment, he symbolizes the conclusion of a lifetime spent in anticipation, finally encountering the one promise that had sustained his spirit through the years—the Messiah himself. I can envision the warmth of hot tears in his eyes, a testament to years of yearning and faith. Perhaps he stood in silent reverence, wholly captivated, as his gaze fell upon the precious child before him. Nestled in his arms was a pure lamb, innocent and unblemished, destined to shatter the barriers of sin and usher in a new era of mercy and grace. The sacred moment vibrated with significance as history intertwined with hope and love in the embrace of this older man’s wonder.

I found myself pondering the depth of Simeon’s experience. I could almost picture him reveling in that moment, fully embracing a sense of supernatural grace and heavenly authority; he was enveloped in an atmosphere of holy majesty. The atmosphere must have been thick with reverence, and in that pivotal instant, he appeared to connect with something far more significant than himself. This celestial harmony transcended the ordinary.

The small bundle struck fear in the hearts of kings. They had it all wrong! He wasn’t their usual king. He couldn’t be eliminated. Authorities couldn’t perceive the spiritual side of God’s kingdom. One day, this child would become a man and, in time, become a sacrifice for all.  (Luke 2: 24-38)

“Lord, You are a witness before me that I must see You in a manifestation promised to redeem my people from all sin and evil. Messiah, You have made yourself as one of us to teach us humility and give us power over infirmity prevailing over darkness.”

And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,  “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.”   (Luke 2: 25-32)

While envisioning this, I wept. He would now be able to leave Earth in peace. He didn’t give

When Jesus Calls

When Jesus Calls

Author Darlene J. Conard

As I strolled down the bustling street, lost in my usual routine, a sudden tug tugged at the depths of my spirit. An overwhelming urge to seek solace in a nearby church pierced through the heavy negativity that shrouded my day. It whispered to me like a gentle breeze, urging, “Aren’t you weary of existing in this turmoil? You can break free from this relentless torment.” Yet another voice echoed in the shadows of my mind, darker and more insidious, “God has forsaken you. He disregarded the abuse inflicted by your father. Embrace the darkness; it is your only friend and protector.” In a moment of twisted clarity, I questioned, why should I fear the darkness when it offers me comfort and familiarity, like an old, worn blanket on a cold night?

As I walked beside my sister, who was blissfully unaware of the turmoil within me, I felt a deep sense of conflict. In the quiet corners of my heart, I could sense Grandma on her knees, fervently praying, pleading with heaven for a glimmer of intervention. Yet, amidst her passionate supplications, a part of me wished she would stop. She exuded such a powerful presence of God’s glory, a radiant light, that it felt almost overwhelming to be nearby.

It wasn’t that I didn’t love her; on the contrary, my heart was filled with affection. But the truth lingered—light cannot comprehend darkness, as articulated in John 5:1. Despite her unwavering faith, Grandma never thrust her beliefs upon me. She didn’t approach me with condemnation or harsh words, reminding me of my faults. Others, however, imposed that judgment upon me relentlessly.

Her prayers, rich with intercessory love, enveloped me like a warm embrace, filled with limitless compassion and comfort. Gifts and cards flowed from her with regularity—tokens of her affection that sometimes felt overwhelming. Each message bore simple yet profound sentiments: “I love you. Love, Grandma.” But in those moments, even the kindest words held little allure for me as I wrestled with my inner darkness.

A saying resonates deeply: “Some people won’t like you because you irritate their demons.” This phrase reflects the reality that when we strive to live a life in close alignment with Jesus, our very being can provoke discomfort in others who may not share the same values or spiritual journey. The evidence of His presence in my life is clear and undeniable, illuminating my path even in my darkest moments.

Now that I’ve found my footing and set my life in order, understanding this truth has become even more apparent. I recognize that I am far from perfect; I carry my share of mistakes and failures like badges of experience. However, in my imperfections, I have come to appreciate His strength, which stands unyielding and ideal, and His grace, which envelops me and proves to be more than enough for every challenge I face.

In the seventeen years, I attended a church whose leadership scolded me for speaking of what I went through, such as witchcraft, child abuse anxiety, and self-mutilation. How will those lost in darkness know there is such hope if they aren’t aware?

I will never forget going to a Pentecostal service with a friend. “Welcome, Holy Spirit” was the first worship song. Then came the individual songs. My friend sang “A Miracle in Every Pew.” It was then that I realized how miserable I was.

I’m in love with one man, and His name is Jesus; he saved my life. I owe Him everything!

My message is this. I’m not ashamed of the gospel. Each one of us has a testimony that can help.

Never stop praying. Give up! Keep serving God with all your heart.

His Beautiful Voice

His Beautiful Voice

Author Darlene J. Conard

As I tilted the coffee pot, a gentle stream of steam curled upward, escaping from the spout like a delicate whisper. The soft swishing sound of the rich liquid filling my cup echoed in the quiet kitchen, evoking memories of countless mornings spent in sacred solitude with God. That singular, familiar sound transported me back to cherished moments, each brimming with warmth and reflection. It’s remarkable how something as simple as the pour of coffee can stir a flowing river of deep thoughts and feelings within us.

Elihu said, “Wait for me a moment, and I will show you that there is much more to be said on behalf of God. I will draw my knowledge from afar, and I will affirm the righteousness of my Creator.” (Job 36:1-2)

There is much more to explore beyond the surface – not simply from any individual, but from the very Creator of the Universe. This divine presence not only communicates with us but also attentively listens to our thoughts, our prayers, and our burdens. It is an extraordinary gift to acknowledge that the Lord desires to dwell among us, to engage in our lives actively, and to have His presence manifest within us. This sacred relationship invites us to open our hearts, allowing His spirit to take a central role in our existence as He seeks to guide, uplift, and inspire us every step of the way.

Set aside some moments today to immerse yourself in the quiet around you. Find a peaceful spot to gather your thoughts and truly listen for what He needs to say and has in store for you. Allow yourself to be open to God’s auditory whispers, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen; I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 KJV

No Box for Me

Author Darlene J. Conard

I feel deeply resentful when my ability to express myself freely is restricted. This limitation encloses me in a cloud of frustration and despair. The weight of unshared thoughts and unvoiced emotions constricts my spirit, leaving me feeling muted and overwhelmingly isolated in a world where connection is vital. Each day becomes a struggle as the silence gnaws at me, emphasizing that my voice is stifled and my true feelings remain hidden.

Upon reflecting on my frustration, thoughts of God began to emerge. I recalled a significant moment when He communicated directly with His prophets, offering guidance through His wisdom. Eventually, a great nation was formed, grounded in the promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Through Moses, the Tabernacle was established, including the Holy of Holies—a sacred area in the tent where priests offered sacrifices for sins. God was said to reside above the Ark of the Covenant, housed in a holy box. (Exodus 31:7) The Ark of the Covenant was not to be touched. (2 Samuel 6:1-6)

We carry His presence, made possible through Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection. He yearned for a relationship that transcended traditional boundaries. No longer content to remain confined to a distant realm, He desired to draw near, to inhabit our hearts and lives in an intimate and transformative way. (Matthew 1:23)

He expressed that he understood my feelings, especially the struggle of expressing oneself.

In summary, God yearned for more than mere confinement within the confines of a box or the limitations of a tent or temple. He sought to reveal His true essence, aiming to express Himself in far more extraordinary and profound ways.

I wholeheartedly seek to embrace God’s presence and divine ways in my life. We must allow God to manifest within us, guiding our thoughts and actions, flowing through our interactions with others, and enveloping us with his love and wisdom in the world around us. By surrendering to this higher power, we can fully experience the transformative influence of the divine in every aspect of our existence.

For His Glory

For His Glory

Author Darlene J. Conard

I couldn’t help but laugh inwardly, fully understanding where Dutch Sheets originated. The Lord urged him to read about the lame man at the Gate Beautiful. “Leave me alone; I’ve read that before,” he thought, not wanting the Lord to hear him. I suppose Dutch, at that moment, didn’t realize that God discerns our thoughts. Once again, I found myself relating to that experience. He explained that he read the passage repeatedly until he finally grasped what the Lord wanted to reveal.

Recently, God reminded me of the story of Gideon, who found himself wrestling with doubt about his ability to lead Israel to victory over the formidable Midianites. Despite being chosen for such a significant mission, Gideon could not see that God indeed sought his willingness to step forward and trust in divine strength. This resonates with me deeply, as I often ask the Lord, “Why have you placed me in the roles of an author, an artist, and a leader when I struggle so much with certain challenges?” God has gently assured me, “That I may be glorified.”

It may seem absurd for someone like me—a person wrestling with dyslexia and ADHD—to take on these responsibilities, especially in an age where such difficulties are often undervalued or overlooked. However, I can confidently say that I can navigate these challenges through the power of the Holy Spirit. Reflecting on the life of Moses, who struggled with a speech impediment and felt inadequate yet encountered the presence of God in profound ways, encourages me. Just as Moses pressed on despite his limitations (Exodus 3:11), I find strength in knowing that God can work through my weaknesses to manifest His glory.

“God, I know those stories. I don’t want to reread it.”

“Take the time to read those words once more, letting their meaning sink deep into your very being until they transform from mere obstacles into stepping stones, void of any power that darkness may wield against you.” I am genuinely thankful for the moments when we hear God’s whisper within our spirits. He has assured us of His unwavering commitment to direct and illuminate our paths with all-encompassing truth.

The Lord may be speaking to you about something as well. Understand that it’s our Heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally.

God uses the impossible things and weaknesses of man to reveal His glory.

“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;”  1 Corinthians 1:27 KJV.

As I carefully dried the last of the dishes, a profound question surfaced: Why do we allow ourselves to worry despite knowing it won’t bring solutions? It’s one of Satan’s devious strategies, enticing us to fret over matters that are beyond our control.

In the past, I found myself often overwhelmed by a constant sense of worry that seemed to color my daily life. It felt like an unshakeable burden that I couldn’t escape. However, after much introspection and personal growth, I am proud to say that I have finally achieved a state of complete liberation from these feelings of anxiety.

Looking back, I realize that my struggle with worry stemmed from a deep-seated need to maintain control over every surface of my existence. This desire for power was rooted in the belief that if I could manage all the variables in my life, I could safeguard myself against uncertainty and chaos. However, I came to understand that this approach only intensified my anxiety, as the thought of surrendering control was daunting. It conjured up sensations of vulnerability and unease as if I were standing at the edge of a precipice, terrified of what might happen if I let go.

Learning to surrender control to God has not been easy. It involved confronting my fears head-on and recognizing that life’s changeableness is something we all must navigate. Embracing this realization has led me to a fresh sense of peace, allowing me to accept that uncertainty is a part of life. This shift in perspective has been transformative, empowering me to let go of worries that once loomed large and to embrace a more present and grounded way of living.

When we encounter situations that lie beyond our influence, such challenges are ultimately beyond our ability to resolve. In these moments, we can take comfort in the belief that only God has the power to navigate and manage difficulties. God assures us that He will look after us, provide for our every need, and guide us through even the most difficult times.

When Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for Passover, twelve-year-old Jesus stayed behind to minister. When they found Him, they asked, “Why did you do this? We were worried.” He replied, “Why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” (Read Luke 2:41-52)

Jesus’ response is one that we should hold close to our hearts; it reminds us that we must be diligent in attending to the work of our Heavenly Father. I recall a powerful message delivered by Evangelist Benson Auxier during a revival service that left a lasting impression on me. He passionately proclaimed, “If you focus on caring for God’s business, He will, in turn, take care of your affairs.” This statement resonates deeply, highlighting the importance of our dedication to fulfilling God’s purpose. We are called to handle the tasks within our reach—what is possible for us—while trusting God to manage unstoppable challenges. In this partnership, we find strength and assurance, knowing that as we invest our efforts in God’s work, He is actively working in the background on our behalf, addressing the impossible.

I have learned that worrying is the enemy’s strategy to tangle us in a web of confusion.

“The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.” Mark 4:14-19 KJV

I desire to remain free from becoming overly preoccupied with the demands and worries of daily life so that I can entirely focus on seizing the opportunity to reach and impact the harvest of souls whom God is actively engaging with and seeking to transform.

I encourage you to stay in the Word of God, pray, and seek Him in all matters!

Although the Bible doesn’t provide specific details about Mary and her Alabaster Box, his life has many possibilities. The Holy Spirit inspired the story you’re about to read. Have we ever considered what it would be like to walk in their shoes? I encourage you to embrace these stories and make them personal. Join me on this journey as we walk in the Word together! Enjoy my new series, “Walking in Their Shoes.” Mary’s Alabaster Box Read Mark 14:3-9 / Luke 7:36-50

A wave of reflection washed over me as I nestled into my favorite chair, cradling a cup of coffee. The rich aroma of the brew mingled with a crisp morning, and the sun shone through the window, creating a cozy atmosphere that invited observation. Suddenly, a series of verses resonated in my spirit: “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” These profound words from Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV) illuminated the stillness around me.

In that moment of quiet, I couldn’t help but marvel at the truth behind those verses. There was a comforting realization that with Him, there was no need for fabrication; I didn’t have to wear a mask or keep my guard up, fearing that He might misinterpret my thoughts or struggles. His compassion is unwavering, flowing freely and renewing each day, inviting me to embrace my true self without fear of judgment.

I am humbled and honored that God Himself shares His secrets with me. It brings me immense relief to know that He stands firmly by my side, with the assurance that no weapon or challenge directed against me will succeed in harming me. “If God be for me —who then can be against me?” Romans 8:31 KJV

This takes me back to a Biblical story: Mary and her alabaster box.

Jesus reclined at the table inside the ornate home of one of the Pharisees, the flickering candlelight casting shadows on the walls. Among the gathered guests, a woman, burdened by her past and aching for redemption, summoned unimaginable courage. With trembling hands and a racing heart, she stepped over the threshold, fully aware of her sins and the weight of her shame. The atmosphere was thick with judgment, yet her desperation for Christ’s transformative power propelled her forward, undeterred by the disgrace surrounding her.

She cradled her most treasured possession with trembling hands: a delicate alabaster box filled with fragrant, precious oil. The beautifully ornate box gleamed in the light, its smooth surface captivating. Inside, it held a collection of luxurious oils, each more exquisite than the last. She had carefully saved this precious gift, selecting just the right moment to share it with someone truly special.

Mary weaved her way through the bustling crowd that filled the lively house, her movements deliberate and focused. With each purposeful step, she scanned the sea of faces, her heart set on finding Jesus amidst the laughter and chatter surrounding her. The crowd’s warmth enveloped her, yet her gaze remained steady, searching for the familiar figure that brought her hope and solace. Hot, trembling tears coursed down her cheeks, blurring her vision as she finally reached Him. She lifted the exquisite alabaster box with trembling hands, its smooth surface glimmering softly in the dim light. She shattered it, the sound echoing like a silent proclamation of her devotion.

As she stood behind Jesus, tears streamed down her cheeks, blurring her vision and causing her voice to quiver with emotion. With each unsteady step toward His feet, she felt the weight of her devotion, nearly losing her balance in the Savior’s overwhelming presence. Those around her exchanged disapproving glances, their scorn tangible as they watched her humble act of adoration unfold.

All Mary longed to do was please Him, her heart swelling with a cascade of pure emotion. As she gently poured the warm, fragrant oils over Jesus’ head, the rich, sweet scent enveloped Him like a comforting embrace, filling the air around them with a delicate aroma that mingled with the hushed whispers of the gathering. She could feel the startled gasps of the guests, their eyes wide with disbelief, yet she couldn’t muster the courage to raise her gaze to meet their stunned expressions. In that sacred moment, nothing else mattered except the overwhelming love that surged within her—a love that felt both unyielding and transformative. He had rescued her from the shadows, reshaping her very existence, and she yearned to express the profound depth of her gratitude and devotion. Miracles had blossomed within her because of His boundless grace, and there was an undeniable urge to show Him how immensely He meant to her.

Battling against the weight of persecution, she sank to the cold, hard floor, her heart bound with gratitude. Her long, ebony tresses cascaded down as she knelt, shimmering like a dark waterfall. She gathered the silky strands with trembling hands and lovingly wrapped them around the feet destined to bear the cruel marks of nails, a sincere symbol of sacrifice and suffering.

Her tears streamed down her cheeks, warm and thick, each drop laden with an overwhelming sense of longing and unquenchable desire.

Anger swelled among the crowd at the mention of her praise, and a storm of voices rose in disapproval. Yet, amidst the turmoil, the Lord intervened, standing as her unwavering defender.

And Jesus said, “Leave her alone; why are you troubling her? She has done a good deed for me. You will always have the poor with you; you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body in preparation for burial. Truly, I tell you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed throughout the world, what she has done will also be mentioned in her honor.”

Her sacrifice was profoundly meaningful to the Lord, resonating with a depth that went beyond mere actions. She possessed a deep, intimate understanding of her Redeemer, allowing her to grasp the essence of His desires. With every gesture, her heart was attuned to the ways of pleasing Him, illuminating her devotion and faith.

Aren’t you grateful for His tender mercies?
